Consistent

Yes, throughout Brenda’s treatment she was continually bombarded with inconsistencies and contradictions. During a consultation with DR Hall, he informed Brenda that at some point in her treatment, it would be possible that the drug, palbociclib would be used again. We were surprised at this. Sometime later whilst attending an appointment with Professor Cameron, we spoke to him regarding what DR Hall had stated about 2nd round with palbocici.

Professor Cameron advised us this simply would not happen. No explanation was given, Brenda and I were however aware from the time she 1st started treatment for secondry breast cancer that the original license for palbociclib only authorised the drug to be used as a 1st line treatment. These licensing terms were changed sometime later, also this drug costs NHS approx £3,500 for a 3 week supply. I believe Brenda was prescribed this drug for about 13 months, at no point did Brenda ever receive continuity in any aspect, even after requesting a little consistency with consultations, we politely requested seeing either Professor Cameron or DR Hall once again this did not happen quite simply we at no point ever knew who Brenda was about to have a consultation with. Appointment letters would always state. consultation with Professor Cameron, as he was head of department, quite simply on any given appointment you Brenda did not know who she was going to ge, whilst attending 1 particular appointment I recollect Brenda and I being somewhat anxious and apprehensive, anticipating who was going to come out and call Brenda’s name, to our serprise a small elderly DR appeared, introducing himself as DR Khan. What happened at this appointment can only be described as disgraceful it was no more a consultation than fly in the air

I felt so sorry for Brenda. I was very angry , but remained positive, and respectful, I don’t know why  we did not hold DR Khan responsible for the fiasco, although we did think he had not been adequatey prepared. He didnt appear to have looked at Brenda’s medical status. He left the consultation room 3 times during the appointment, he advised us he was attempting to refer with DR Hall. Brenda was upset that neither, DR Hall or Professor Cameron had passed her to someone who was ill – prepared.

Complaint

I made a formal complaint on Brenda’s behalf to Professor Cameron. He agreed to a second consultation and wrote it up as a second opinion. This second opinion appointment followed approx a week later. Professor Cameron apologised stating our pool consultation with DR Khan was another indication of the situation within the NHS, another excuse the question for Brenda was why her, they, the DR’s, NHS would be thinking why not.
